How To Become an Oathbreaker Paladin: BG3 (Baldur’s Gate 3)

Paladins are known to fight for a cause and have sworn oaths that they must follow to keep the peace and their righteousness but not all keep to these oaths.

Sometimes the path to victory requires ambition, power, and sacrifice, which can end up with a Paladin breaking their oath, but this is not the end for them.

The Oathbreaker Subclass is the darker path that Paladins may end up treading, which gives them tainted abilities that relate to their chaotic patch.

What is The Oathbreaker Subclass?

The Oathbreaker is sort of a hidden Subclass for Paladins, which involves them going against what they stood for in the first place.

Paladins who break their oath are turned into the Oathbreaker class but this can be reversed if they choose to swear to a new oath.

When changed to the Oathbreaker class, you will gain new powers that are on the opposite side of what a Paladin uses.

How To Become an Oathbreaker Paladin?Oathbreaker Paladin

To become an Oathbreaker Paladin, you will need to go against one of the oaths you swore such as killing an innocent when you had chosen a path meant to protect them.

Depending on which oath you have chosen, you will need to break them by doing the opposite of what you swore to do.

The following is the oath that Paladins may choose when they create their character:

  • Oath of the Ancients – Preserve the sanctity of life and beautify nature.
  • Oath of Devotion – Protect the weak and pursue the greater good.
  • Oath of Vengeance – Deliver justice to those who have committed the most grievous sins.

There are multiple ways to break these oaths and you can do so at any point in the game by choosing the wrong actions such as killing creatures, wrong responses, and more.

After you have broken your oath, the Oathbreaker Knight will appear and tell you that he will wait for you at your camp to speak about what you have done.

From your camp, you may meet with the Oathbreaker Knight and decide whether you will accept the transition into an Oathbreaker or amend your mistakes and swear an oath again.

How To Change Back to Paladin?

Breaking your oath will still make you a Paladin in a way but this is different from the other ones that are sworn under an oath.

If you wish to restore your status and no longer be an Oathbreaker, you will need to speak with the Oathbreaker Knight, who remains in your camp.

Verdict

Being an Oathbreaker does not mean that you are headed down a dark path, it simply means you went against your oath and there could be many reasons.

The powers you obtain will change into darker ones, which can sometimes be considered more powerful, which is why some players prefer it.

Regardless of your choices, you can still revert to normal if you wish but whichever you choose, you will still be able to decide if you want to be good or evil.
