While out exploring, you may come across a quest that has you searching for a book called The Necromancy of Thay.
This can later lead to your character discovering new knowledge if they can open it but there is a missing part needed for you to do so.
Luckily, we have found both the book and its key, which will allow you to delve into the book to expand your character’s knowledge to learn a few new things.
How To Get Necromancy of Thay?
To get The Necromancy of Thay book, you will need to head to the Blighted Village and enter the closest building to the Ancient Circle Sigil.
Head behind the counter and you will find a hatch that will lead you down into a cellar where you need to move a bookcase by interacting with or attacking a lever to the very left. (behind crates)
This will move the bookcase and allow you to continue into a cave where you need to interact with the Ornate Mirror and provide the following answers:
- Tell It Your Name
- Yes, an ally! I’m an ally of your master’s.
- Szass Tam is a foul, wretched creature.
- I read a doctor’s journal – he used balsam to clean a wound.
- I’d look for whatever spell will rid me of this worm in my head.
The guardian will let you through and you will be able to enter the laboratory, continue to the right to find the rusted key, and proceed to the cell to get the book.
How To Get Dark Amethyst?
For the Dark Amethyst location, you will want to head into the Whispering Depths, which can be reached by going into the well found in the Blighted Village.
Another way to get into the Whispering Depths is to go inside the house in the Blighted Village that has a hole covered with spider webs.
You will need to destroy the spider webs (fire damage works) to jump down, which will bring you into the Whispering Depths.
The Dark Amethyst is located near the pit that allows you to jump down (must have Feather Fall spell) into the Underdark.
How To Open The Necromancy of Thay?
Once you have the Necromancy of Thay and the Dark Amethyst, interacting with the book will allow you to begin reading from it. (You can decide to destroy it too)
Reading from the book will require you to pass a couple of saving throws, which will provide you with a bonus to Wisdom and the ability to cast Speak With Dead.
You can later learn even more from the book during Act III but this requires you to get to Elminster’s Vault and find a book called Tharchiate Vigor. (Allows you to resurrect ghouls)
Verdict
The Necromancy of Thay is too good of an opportunity to pass on but this can upset Astarion since he probably wants to get his hands on the book himself.
Gaining the ability to speak to the dead can be a big bonus later and the additional Wisdom is something that can help you out with saving throws and checks.
It is best to keep the book somewhere safe until you reach Act III as the bonuses that follow later can be a good addition to your character.
