ARK: How to Get Keratin

ARK Keratin

You may notice some of the creatures in Ark have sturdy shells, horns, and other hard bone-like parts that may be collected, Keratin.

Keratin is one of the more needed resources when it comes to crafting Cementing Paste and Flyer Saddles.

Knowing how to farm Keratin is important as you will be needing this resource both in the early and later stages as you progress.

How to Farm Keratin?

You can harvest Keratin from creatures that have bones, shells, and exoskeletons that appear to be similar to the resource.

Killing creatures and harvesting their bodies will allow you to farm the Keratin from them, which depends on the creature when it comes to amount.

The larger the creature or more Keratin it has present on its appearance, the more likely you will get higher counts tens of the resource.

Best Way to Farm Keratin

Keratin is best farmed using Sabertooth, Therizinosaur, and Direwolf creatures, but Metal Hatchets will also allow you to collect a good amount.

Using a Chainsaw will also provide you with a good amount of Keratin but this needs slightly more expensive resources to craft and Gasoline to power.

Smaller creatures tend to have less Keratin, while larger ones will provide a better amount for you to harvest after killing them.

Keratin Uses

Keratin has the same uses as Chitin although it cannot be used to make the Chitin Set, instead, the two resources can substitute each other when crafting certain items.

It is noticeable that the majority of the flyer saddles require Keratin (or Chitin) to craft, making it necessary to have Keratin for flyers.

Cementing Paste needs either Keratin or Chitin along with Stone to be crafting, which means you will need a lot of this resource for later on since Cementing Paste is in high demand.

Verdict

On most maps, Keratin is sometimes the more dominant of the two (Chitin being the other) since most of the creatures bear this resource.

If there is not enough Chitin, Keratin may be used to complete the crafting recipes that Chitin is originally needed for.

Keeping a stock of both Keratin and Chitin is not necessary but it’s best to collect as much as you can if you need a lot of Cementing Paste.
