When Diablo 4 released Season 8, there were many changes to the game and one of these changes was the Lair Boss Rework, which affected Stygian Stones.
Before Season 8, Stygian Stones had different uses and were mainly used as materials to face stronger bosses but with the rework, they have been altered.
These Magic Lair Boss Keys now serve as a transmutable item that can be used to substitute missing Lair Boss Keys for certain Lair Boss Dungeons.
How To Get Stygian Stone?
Stygian Stones can be obtained by defeating any Initiate Lair Boss and opening their Hoard Chest, which requires you to have the Lair Boss Key.
Once a Hoard Chest in the lair of an Initiate Boss has been opened, there will be a chance for Stygian Stones to drop along with the other loot.
Stygian Stones are not Guaranteed drops, but they do drop now and then when you are farming Lair Bosses for loot.
Keep in mind, defeating a boss will not drop Stygian Stone and instead, they will only have a chance to drop if you open a Hoard Chest. (Initiate Lair Boss Dungeons only)
Stygian Stone Uses
Stygian Stones have two uses, which are tied to transmutation and there are two ways for you to use them depending on where you currently are.
These may be used at any Alchemist when you are accessing the Transmutation Menu, allowing you to transmute Stygian Stones into one of the following Greater Lair Boss Keys:
Transmuting Stygian Stones will require 1 piece per Lair Boss Key, making them the perfect way to fill in any missing Lair Boss Keys that you may need.
Aside from Transmutation, using a Stygian Stone from your Consumable Menu while inside of a Lair Boss Dungeon will provide you with the Lair Boss Key for that specific dungeon. (Greater Boss Lairs)
Verdict
Even after the Season 8 update, Stygian Stones are still considered rare, but this is fair since there are other ways to obtain Greater Lair Boss Keys.
It is a good idea to save your Stygian Stones for later as you may need them when playing on higher difficulties and they can be a great way to provide you with the Lair Boss Keys that you need.
While farming Initiate Lair Bosses, the loot from the Hoard Chests may include Greater Lair Boss Keys and Stygian Stones, making this a good way to farm them for later.
