Umbral Engrams are a more advanced type of engram which have returned from previous seasons but mainly focus on the current one.
Currently, the Season of the Chosen allowed you to unlock specific gear based on how you would modify the engrams at H.E.L.M. to get specific items.
The Umbral Engrams affect seasonal equipment and will allow the player to continuously unlock gear from certain tables of their choice.

Where to Get Umbral Engrams?
Umbral Engrams will drop from time to time as you play during the different seasons and may even come at random.
You can obtain Umbral Engrams from fighting enemies in the open, participating in events, doing patrols, and much more.
It is possible to also obtain Umbral Engram while doing missions, quests, and other story-involved game plots.

How to Open Umbral Engrams?
To open Umbral Engrams, head to the Umbral Decoder and interact with it to view the available Umbral Engrams that you have.
Select the Umbral Engrams you wish to open (this includes normal Umbral Engrams and those that have been modified) to receive the gear.
You can always head to the Prismatic Recaster (in front of the Umbral Decoder) to modify your Umbral Engrams to get a better chance of acquiring specific gear.
Umbral Engrams that you modify via the Prismatic Recaster are known and Focused Umbral Engrams.
Focused Umbral Engram
Umbral Engrams are special types of engrams that can replace their Umbral variant by modifying them in the Prismatic Recaster.
This provides a chance to obtain an item from a specific drop table, depending on which modification is made.
You can select between different types of weapons or gear from each season and modify the Umbral Engram to be a Focused Umbral Engram.

Verdict
Umbral Engrams are great ways to increase your Power Level and with the option to choose from each season, you can choose the gear you want for a better chance to get it.
Most players will resort to saving up to create several Focused Umbral Engrams to complete a whole set of the same seasonal armor.
Each seasonal modification requires that you have prerequisites which can be seen when previewing the Umbral Engrams.
