Diablo 4 Horadric Spellcraft Guide (How It Works & Upgrading)

Diablo 4’s Season 9: Sins of the Horadrim has introduced new features to the game, and in this Season, you gain the ability to use Horadric Spellcraft.

To sum things up, this acts as a way for you to upgrade your character’s skills, allowing you to link Catalysts that provide bonus effects to them.

Aside from the addons to your skills, these Catalysts may be further enhanced with Elemental Infusions as well as Arcanas, giving you several ways to mix and match this new power.

How Does Horadric Spellcraft Work?

Once you get the chance to start testing out the new Horadric Spellcraft system, things will be a lot clearer, and you should have no trouble using it as you progress.

To summarize how Horadric Spellcraft works, keep the following in mind:

  • Catalyst – An addon that you can allocate to a skill slot that provides a bonus function to the skill.
  • Infusions – These modify the spell (Catalyst) by changing the elemental damage it deals to enemies.
  • Arcana – Provides bonus effects that affect your Catalyst when it takes effect after the skill it has been allocated to has been cast.

How To Get and Use Catalysts?

Your first Catalyst is available by claiming the first rank rewards from the Horadric Focus, while the rest of the Catalysts are obtained by completing Seasonal Quests.

Once you have a Catalyst or more, you can choose one to equip in a skill slot in the Horadric Spellcraft menu, and this will cause it to be activated when that skill is cast.

5 Catalysts can be unlocked, and you may only have 1 active Horadric Spell active, so choose the one you want to focus on.

The following are the Catalysts that you can get in Season 9:

  • Celestial Surge – Claim first rank of Horadric Knowledge (Claim at Horadric Focus)
  • Astral Pillar – Complete “Bearing the Weight of Ghosts” Seasonal Quest
  • Disintegrate – Complete “Keepers of the Glen” Seasonal Quest
  • Propulsion – Complete “To Walk Where Spirits Tread” Seasonal Quest
  • Cosmic Anomaly – Complete “The Unseeable Demands Their Gaze” Seasonal Quest

How To Upgrade Horadric Spellcraft?

As you progress through the season, you will be able to obtain Horadric Phials, which is a Currency Used to upgrade Catalysts, Infusions and Arcanas.

These may be obtained by completing Nightmare Dungeons, Horadric Strongrooms and Escalating Nightmares.

Viewing your Catalysts, Infusions or Arcanas will allow you to upgrade them using Horadric Phials, which will improve their effects.

How To Get and Use Infusions?

Similar to Catalyst, you may also obtain your first Infusion from the first rank reward from the Horadric Focus (Horadric Knowledge reward) and the rest from Seasonal Quests.

To use an Infusion, open the Horadric Spellcraft menu, and you may drag it into the corresponding slot to alter the Elemental Damage your Catalyst does.

Equipping an Infusion will alter the damage of all of the Catalysts that you have equipped, modifying them all to have the same element.

The following are the Infusions that you can get in Season 9:

  • Thundering Particle (Lightning Damage) – Claim the first rank of Horadric Knowledge
  • Corrosive Vapor (Poison Damage) – Complete “Bearing the Weight of Ghosts” Seasonal Quest
  • Glacial Nimbus (Cold Damage) – Complete “Keepers of the Glen” Seasonal Quest
  • Smoldering Ember (Fire Damage) – Complete “To Walk Where Spirits Tread” Seasonal Quest
  • Nebulous Extract (Shadow Damage) – Complete “The Unseeable Demands Their Gaze” Seasonal Quest

How To Get and Use Arcanas?

There are 3 types of rarity when it comes to Arcanas and these are Legendary, Rare, and Magic, and these all have different effects.

Obtaining Magic can be done by completing Horadric Strongrooms, while Rare and Legendary require that you progress with your Horadric Knowledge.

As you progress with your Horadric Knowledge, you can claim the “Rare Arcana” reward, and there is a Rare and Legendary variant of these.

Claiming these will allow you to start obtaining Rare and later Legendary Arcanas when you complete Horadric Strongrooms afterward.

There are 3 slots available, and you may equip an Arcana in each of them, which will affect all of your Catalysts.
