Breeding Pals has always been useful for getting specific offspring, but Mutations give you another reason to keep those Breeding Farms running constantly.
Mutations can unexpectedly change what you get from breeding, potentially resulting in a different Pal with impressive stats and Passive Skills you normally cannot obtain.
While getting a Mutated Egg mainly comes down to luck, there are ways to improve your chances and make farming them much more efficient.
What Are Mutations in Palworld?
Mutations are rare breeding outcomes where an egg becomes a Mutated Egg instead of giving you the Pal normally expected from its parents.
A Mutated Egg can hatch into a different and potentially much rarer Pal, making the result considerably more interesting than your usual breeding attempts.
The base chance for an egg to mutate is only 1%, meaning you may need plenty of breeding attempts before finally getting a Mutated Egg.
Unlike Ominous and other eggs found while exploring Palpagos, Mutated Eggs are obtained through breeding and will not randomly appear around the world.
How to Get Mutations in Palworld?
Every egg produced at a Breeding Farm has a small chance to become a Mutated Egg regardless of the Pal you originally expected.
Under normal circumstances, each bred egg has a 1% Mutation chance, making continuously producing eggs the simplest way to eventually encounter one.
The Mutation is decided when the egg is produced, so changing your Incubator or doing anything differently afterward will not improve the result.
We recommend running multiple Breeding Farms when possible, as producing eggs simultaneously gives you considerably more opportunities for a Mutation to occur.
What Happens When a Pal Mutates?
A Mutated Egg can produce a different Pal species from what you would normally get from the two Pals that you are currently breeding.
Mutated Pals hatch as Alpha Pals with very high Stat Potentials, giving you an excellent starting point if you plan on using them.
They also begin partially condensed and receive powerful Passive Skills, including at least one Mutation-exclusive passive that you normally cannot obtain through regular breeding.
How to Increase Mutation Chances?
The best way to directly increase your Mutation chance is using an Extravagant Vegetable Cake when breeding instead of one of the other Cakes.
Using an Extravagant Vegetable Cake increases the Mutation chance from 1% to 3%, giving each egg a much better chance of becoming a Mutated Egg.
Even with the increased chance, Mutated Eggs remain rare, so having plenty of these Cakes prepared beforehand will make repeated attempts much easier.
Possible Pal Mutation Outcomes
The Pal that hatches from a Mutated Egg is not completely random, as the parents you are breeding influence which species can appear.
Different breeding combinations can result in different Mutated Pals, while certain combinations may repeatedly lead you toward the same possible Mutation outcomes.
You may notice Pals such as Aegidron appearing when breeding powerful late-game Pals, particularly when several combinations fall within similar breeding ranges.
If you keep receiving the same Mutation, changing the breeding pair can open up different possibilities instead of repeatedly producing similar Mutated Pals.
Mutation-Exclusive Passive Skills
Mutated Pals can hatch with special Passive Skills tied to Mutations, giving you another reason to keep them even when you want another species.
These exclusive passives include Babysitter, Heavily Armored, Idiosyncratic, Immortality, and Sky Strider, with each providing benefits suited to different Pal builds.
Once you get an exclusive passive you want, keep that Pal since you can use breeding to eventually transfer it onto other Pals.
Which Cake is Best for Mutations?
Extravagant Vegetable Cake is our preferred choice for Mutation hunting because it directly increases the Mutation chance of an egg from 1% to 3%.
Vegetable Cake instead produces two eggs per breeding cycle, giving you more individual attempts without increasing the normal Mutation chance of each egg.
If Mutated Eggs are specifically what you want, we recommend Extravagant Vegetable Cake rather than simply focusing on producing additional normal eggs.
Are Mutated Pals Stronger?
Mutated Pals start with excellent Stat Potentials and partial Condensation, which can save you plenty of work compared with raising an ordinary Pal.
Their Mutation-exclusive Passive Skills can also provide unusual advantages, making some Mutated Pals particularly useful as the starting point for future builds.
However, the real value comes from their combination of strong starting stats, Condensation progress, and access to passives unavailable from ordinary breeding results.
Tips for Getting Mutated Pals
Try running several Breeding Farms simultaneously when possible, as Mutation farming ultimately comes down to producing enough eggs to overcome the low percentage involved.
Stockpile Extravagant Vegetable Cakes beforehand, since constantly stopping your breeding operation for ingredients can make an already random process considerably slower.
Do not expect a Mutation after a certain number of eggs, as each attempt has its own chance and long unlucky streaks can still happen.
Keep useful Mutated Pals even when you do not want their species, especially if they carry an exclusive passive that could benefit another breeding project.
Experiment with different breeding pairs when targeting particular Mutated Pals, since changing the parents can also change the possible Mutation outcomes you receive.
Verdict
Mutations add another layer to Pal breeding, rewarding lucky attempts with unusual Pals that come with excellent stats and exclusive Passive Skills.
Extravagant Vegetable Cakes are your best option when intentionally farming Mutated Eggs, although even the improved Mutation chance will still require plenty of breeding.
Whether you want stronger Pals or Mutation-exclusive passives, keeping your Breeding Farms active can eventually provide something much better than the expected offspring.
