Diablo 4: Lair Boss Ladder Guide (Season 13)

After completing the early parts of a Diablo 4 season, players will eventually begin pushing toward the endgame in search of stronger gear and better rewards.

This often involves leveling up, completing activities, and challenging powerful bosses that can drop some of the best equipment in the game.

When it comes to boss progression, there is a path that players can follow, starting with Initiate Lair Bosses and progressing to Greater Lair Bosses before Exalted ones.

Lair Boss Rework

The Lair Boss system was reworked in Season 8, changing how bosses are challenged and how players obtain rewards from defeating them.

Instead of requiring summoning materials to fight bosses, rewards became tied to Hoards that appear after a Lair Boss has been defeated.

Season 13 further updated the system by replacing individual boss keys and materials with Lair Keys, Greater Lair Keys, and Betrayer’s Husks.

These are now used to open Hoards after defeating bosses and can be obtained through seasonal progression as well as various endgame activities.

Lair Boss Ladder Guide

Initiate Lair Bosses

Initiate Lair Bosses become available once you reach Torment I or higher and can be challenged at their respective dungeon locations.

Defeating an Initiate Lair Boss causes its Hoard to appear, allowing you to claim rewards from that boss’s specific loot table.

Opening an Initiate Lair Boss Hoard requires a Lair Key, which can be obtained from various activities while playing in Torment difficulty.

Initiate Lair Bosses include the following:

  • Beast in the Ice
  • Grigoire
  • Lord Zir
  • Urivar
  • Varshan

Greater Lair Bosses

Greater Lair Bosses represent the next step in progression and provide access to stronger rewards and additional Unique Items.

Defeating a Greater Lair Boss will cause its Hoard to appear, allowing you to claim rewards from that boss’s loot table.

Opening a Greater Lair Boss Hoard requires a Greater Lair Key, which can be earned from various endgame activities.

Greater Lair Bosses include the following:

  • Andariel
  • Duriel
  • Harbinger of Hatred
  • The Butcher

Exalted Lair Bosses

Exalted Lair Bosses sit at the top of the Lair Boss ladder and offer some of the most valuable rewards available from boss farming.

Unlike Initiate and Greater Lair Bosses, Exalted encounters have their own requirements for opening Hoards after they have been defeated.

Exalted Lair Bosses include the following:

Belial, Lord of Lies

Belial can be encountered in the Palace of the Deceiver and requires Betrayer’s Husks to open his Hoard after being defeated.

Betrayer’s Husks are mainly obtained by defeating Belial during ambush encounters that can occur after opening other Lair Boss Hoards.

Echo of Mephisto

Echo of Mephisto can be challenged in the Cathedral of Hatred on Torment X or higher and is intended as one of the most difficult boss encounters available.

Opening the Echo of Mephisto’s Hoard requires a Crux of the False Prophet, which can be obtained through endgame progression and high-tier activities.

Verdict

The best progression path is to start with Initiate Lair Bosses and use them to build up access to Greater Lair Boss farming.

As you continue clearing Hoards, Belial will naturally begin to appear during runs, giving you access to Betrayer’s Husks for Exalted progression.

At the highest end, Echo of Mephisto becomes the final target, offering some of the strongest rewards available for fully progressed builds.
