The Tome of Want is a new feature that was added to the game with the release of Episode: Heresy and this serves to get a lot of rewards during the episode.
Guardians who continue to delve into the Nether will want to use the Tome of Want often to obtain several rewards, but this also requires that you have Essence of Desire.
Once you have the Tome of Want and enough Essence of Desire, you may start reaping several rewards depending on the Rituals of Desire that you activate.
How To Get Tome of Want?
The Tome of Want is obtainable from the Shaping Slab once you have reached Reputation Rank 3, which can be done in the Nether.
While exploring the Nether you may increase your rank by defeating bosses and destroying Sigil Stones that drop from time to time when enemies are defeated.
Another way to increase your Reputation Rank would be to turn in Metastasized Essentia at the Taken Altar in Eris Morn’s Apartment.
How To Use Tome of Want?
To use the Tome of Want, you will need to open your inventory, and you will find it in the Accessories Section, where you may open it.
You will need to choose a Base Reward Scripture (Rare Reward Scripture) and optionally choose a Crumbling Reward Scripture (Legendary Reward Scripture) to define the rewards.
The third slot will allow you to activate the Ritual of Desire, which costs Essence of Desire and once this is done, the Tome of Want will have Active Ritual Charges.
Each time you complete activities, and defeat powerful combatants or other Guardians, progress will be gained for the Active Ritual Charges. (Reaching 100% for each charge grants rewards)
Tome Engravings
Tome Engravings are enhancements that may be activated to provide you with boosts to your Artifact Perks.
These are unlocked as you progress with the Tablet of Ruin (Artifact) as well as with your Seasonal Reputation with the Shaping Slab.
Once you have unlocked Tome Engravings, you will be able to select one from each column to activate when accessing the Tome of Want.
The following are the Tome Engravings that may be unlocked and activated:
Column 1
- Engraving: King’s Vestige – Defeating a Volatile target grants class ability energy.
- Engraving: Unraveling Orbs – Strand weapons deal increases damage to Strand debuffed targets.
Column 2
- Engraving: Dielectric – Arc debuffed rapid final blows spawn an Orb of Power and return a small portion of health.
- Engraving: Elemental Siphon – Elemental Pickups grant matching Super energy when collected.
Column 3
- Engraving: Maligned Harvest – Weaken targets to receive a small Void overshield.
- Engraving: Twisted Horde – Dealing damage generates multiple Threadlings.
Column 4
- Engraving: Warpriest’s Might – Defeating powerful combatants disorients nearby rank-and-file combatants.
- Engraving: To Shreds – Unravelling projectiles deal increased damage, especially to severed targets.
Ritual Rites
Ritual Rites can be activated once you have enough Essence of Desire, and these will often cost you 2 or 5 depending on what Reward Scriptures you choose.
There are 2 Taken Scripture Slots, which allow you to select a Rare Reward Scripture that serves as the base modifier for your rewards.
The second slot allows you to choose a Crumbling Scripture or Amorphous Scripture, which allows you to obtain more specific rewards upon progressing with your Ritual of Desire.
The following are the Rare Reward Scriptures (First Slot)
- Episodic Weapons – Sets rewards to Episodic Weapons
- Episodic Armor – Sets reward to Episodic Armor
- Reprisal Weapons – Sets rewards to Reprisal Weapons
- Worldy Weapons – Sets rewards for World Weapons
- Worldy Armor – Sets rewards to World Armor
- Currency and Materials – Sets rewards to Glimmer
After choosing one of the base Reward Scriptures, you will have the option to choose a more specific reward depending on if you have chosen weapons, armor, or currency and materials.
Choosing a Crumbling Scripture requires you have obtained it as a drop as these are required to activate them, but you may also spend Sigil Shards instead.

When choosing a Secondary Scripture, you will be able to choose the Amorphous Scripture: Ultimate Power, which provides a chance to obtain rare materials.
These include Ascendant Alloy, Ascendant Shards, and Exotic Engrams but the Amorphous Scripture will only provide you with one reward.
Tome of Want Rewards
Tome of Want Rewards are obtained once you have activated a Ritual of Desire after choosing the Reward Scriptures you want and beginning the ritual.
Once a ritual has begun, completing the required objectives will earn you progress that eventually consumes Active Ritual Charges.
Each time an Active Ritual Charge is consumed, you will gain a ton of rewards related to the Reward Scriptures that you have chosen for the Ritual of Desire.
Verdict
Guardians will eventually obtain the Tome of Want regardless of whether they progress with the main quest, but it is still recommended to do so.
Completing Active Ritual Charges does not require that you do activities or defeat combatants in the Nether, but progress is much faster if you do this activity.
Choosing specific rewards can be done with Crumbling Scriptures, which allows you to ultimately farm the equipment that you want during the episode.
