The Splinter of Terror allows us to wield Diablo’s power in Season 15, unleashing additional Fire damage through its Iconic Power, Flames of Metus.
Its upgrades provide additional resource generation, Crowd Control, and damage while offering bonuses for activities such as Helltides and Infernal Hordes.
We can unlock all six upgrades by increasing our reputation with Diablo, making the Splinter more effective as we progress through the season.
How to Get the Splinter of Terror?
The Splinter of Terror becomes available during the Season of Hell’s Legacy questline, where we encounter the three Prime Evils and obtain their respective Splinters.
After completing the seasonal questline, we can select Diablo’s Splinter of Terror as our active Prime Evil Power and begin increasing its reputation.
Only one Prime Evil Splinter can be active at a time, so we will need to switch powers if we want to use Baal’s or Mephisto’s abilities instead.
What Does the Splinter of Terror Do?
The Splinter of Terror grants us Flames of Metus, an Iconic Power that periodically unleashes lines of fire that damage enemies and apply additional Fire damage over four seconds.
Since the power activates automatically, it provides another source of damage without requiring us to change our normal skill rotation or use additional abilities.
Increasing our reputation unlocks upgrades that improve Flames of Metus while providing additional benefits for resource generation, combat, and seasonal activities.
All Splinter of Terror Upgrades
The Splinter of Terror has six upgrades that become available as we increase our reputation with Diablo throughout the season.
Each upgrade improves Flames of Metus or provides additional benefits, with the final upgrade becoming available at Rank XXIV.
Rank II – Flaring Cinders (350 Reputation)
Flaring Cinders allows Flames of Metus to generate additional Aberrant Cinders whenever the power activates during Helltides.
This upgrade provides another way to collect the currency needed to open Tortured Gifts, allowing us to accumulate more Cinders while clearing enemies and completing Helltide activities.
Rank VI – Pounding Heart (1,300 Reputation)
Pounding Heart causes Flames of Metus to generate 50 Primary Resource whenever it activates, providing an additional source of resource generation during combat.
The effect is particularly useful for builds that consume large amounts of Primary Resource, helping us maintain our damage without relying entirely on our normal resource-generating abilities.
Rank X – Primeval Essence (5,150 Reputation)
Primeval Essence allows Flames of Metus to generate additional Aether during Infernal Hordes, increasing the amount of currency we can collect throughout the activity.
Since Flames of Metus activates automatically, we can accumulate additional Aether while clearing enemy waves without changing our normal approach to combat.
Rank XVI – Dread Presence (13,100 Reputation)
Dread Presence allows Flames of Metus to Slow enemies by 30% and make them Vulnerable, providing additional Crowd Control and opportunities to deal increased damage.
This upgrade complements builds that benefit from attacking Vulnerable enemies, while the Slow effect helps us manage larger groups during more demanding encounters.
Rank XXI – Consuming Blaze (17,400 Reputation)
Consuming Blaze causes the first hit from Flames of Metus to deal an additional 20% of an enemy’s Maximum Life over four seconds.
Although this additional damage cannot be increased through other bonuses, it provides another source of damage when fighting tougher enemies with larger health pools.
Rank XXIV – Rapture of Fear (20,000 Reputation)
Rapture of Fear gives us a chance to trigger a five-second buff whenever we kill an enemy, increasing the number of Flames of Metus unleashed during its duration.
The additional fire attacks are particularly useful when clearing large groups, allowing us to deal more damage as we continue defeating enemies throughout an encounter.
How to Increase Splinter of Terror Reputation?
We can increase our reputation with Diablo by keeping the Splinter of Terror active while participating in Waking Nightmares and defeating Remnants of Terror.
Reaching higher reputation ranks unlocks additional upgrades, with Rank XXIV requiring 20,000 reputation to obtain the Splinter’s final bonus.
We can also take advantage of the Splinter’s activity-specific upgrades when farming Helltides and Infernal Hordes, allowing us to collect additional rewards while progressing through the season.
Best Builds for the Splinter of Terror
The Splinter of Terror complements many builds because Flames of Metus activates independently, providing additional damage without interfering with our normal abilities.
Pounding Heart makes the Splinter useful for resource-intensive builds, while Dread Presence provides another source of Vulnerable and Crowd Control during combat.
Its additional bonuses for Helltides and Infernal Hordes also make it useful for builds focused on farming these activities throughout the season.
Some builds that can make good use of the Splinter of Terror include:
- Fireball Sorcerer
- Whirlwind Barbarian
- Quill Volley Spiritborn
- Blood Surge Necromancer
- Pulverize Druid
- Barrage Rogue
- Legion Warlock
- Vanguard Warlock
Verdict
The Splinter of Terror provides an automatic source of Fire damage through Flames of Metus, allowing us to deal additional damage while continuing to use our normal abilities.
Its upgrades offer a combination of resource generation, Crowd Control, additional damage, and activity-specific bonuses for Helltides and Infernal Hordes.
With all six upgrades unlocked, we can take full advantage of Diablo’s power while farming seasonal activities or experimenting with different builds.
