Sanctuary is being invaded by nightmares from Diablo’s past, bringing back familiar dungeons, legendary bosses, and some of the series’ most memorable encounters.
In Season 15, you can descend beneath Tristram Cathedral, revisit the Worldstone Keep, and discover unexpected encounters while exploring Sanctuary.
These Waking Nightmares offer new challenges, valuable rewards, and Capstone dungeons that you’ll need to conquer as you progress through the Season Ranks.
What Are Waking Nightmares?
Waking Nightmares are seasonal dungeons that recreate locations and encounters from previous Diablo games, with three types offering different challenges.
Major Waking Nightmares feature large, multi-level dungeons where you face Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto, with additional Nightmare and Hell difficulties.
Minor Waking Nightmares feature nine smaller dungeons, including four Capstone challenges required to progress through the Season Ranks.
Random Waking Nightmares offer shorter encounters with returning locations, enemies, and bosses that you can discover while exploring Sanctuary.
Major Waking Nightmares
Major Waking Nightmares are the largest seasonal dungeons, recreating three adventures that culminate in battles against the Prime Evils.
You first encounter them during the Season of Hell’s Legacy questline, with more difficult versions available for later Season Rank challenges.
Diablo – The Labyrinth
The Labyrinth recreates the original Diablo’s descent beneath Tristram Cathedral, taking you through four increasingly dangerous areas: the Cathedral, Catacombs, Caves, and Hell.
First encountered during The Brother’s Keeper, this Major Waking Nightmare takes you through multiple dungeon levels before the final confrontation with the Echo of Diablo.
Diablo II – Worldstone Keep
Worldstone Keep recreates Diablo II’s fifth act, taking you through the Ancients’ Way, Arreat Summit, Worldstone Keep, and Throne of Destruction.
First encountered during The Horadrim’s Fate, this Major Waking Nightmare culminates in the Worldstone Chamber, where you must defeat the Echo of Baal.
Diablo II – Durance of Hate
Durance of Hate recreates locations from Diablo II’s third act, taking you through familiar areas around Kurast as you progress toward Mephisto’s lair.
First encountered during The Burning Shepherd, this Major Waking Nightmare features multiple dungeon areas before concluding with a battle against the Echo of Mephisto.
Major Waking Nightmare Difficulty Levels
Each Major Waking Nightmare has three versions, beginning with its seasonal quest encounter and progressing to Nightmare and Hell difficulties.
The Nightmare versions serve as Capstone challenges for the later Season Ranks, with each requiring a specific Torment difficulty.
- Worldstone Keep (Nightmare): Torment IV, required to unlock Season Rank VI.
- Durance of Hate (Nightmare): Torment VI, required to unlock Season Rank VII.
- The Labyrinth (Nightmare): Torment VIII, required to unlock Season Rank VIII.
All three dungeons also have Hell versions at Torment XII, providing additional challenges beyond their Nightmare counterparts.
Minor Waking Nightmares
Minor Waking Nightmares are standard-length dungeons that recreate individual locations from previous Diablo games, each featuring its own objectives and returning enemies.
There are nine Minor Waking Nightmares, including four that serve as Capstone challenges for the earlier Season Ranks.

How to Use Chronicle of Nightmares?
Chronicle of Nightmares are seasonal dungeon keys that allow you to activate modified versions of the nine Minor Waking Nightmares.
Each Chronicle is associated with a particular dungeon and features two random affixes that can introduce additional hazards, stronger enemies, or extra rewards.
To use a Chronicle, activate it from your inventory and enter its associated dungeon, where the selected modifiers will affect your next run.
Some modifiers introduce special encounters, including the Echo of Pindleskin, which has a chance to drop any item in the game when defeated.
Chronicles are also required for the Vessel of Horrors seasonal challenge, which involves obtaining one and completing a modified Waking Nightmare.
Random Waking Nightmares
Random Waking Nightmares are shorter encounters that bring back individual locations, bosses, and smaller adventures from earlier Diablo games.
Most appear through temporary portals rather than permanent dungeon entrances, allowing you to encounter them while exploring Sanctuary or completing other activities.
The following list includes the returning popup encounters, along with Demon Crypts and its encounter with Na-Krul.

How to Find Random Waking Nightmares?
Random Waking Nightmares can appear while exploring Sanctuary, providing access to short encounters without requiring you to enter one of the standard seasonal dungeons.
Their temporary portals do not have permanent world-map markers, so watch for them while completing activities such as Helltides and Whispers.
Season 15 also introduces Popup Rifts, a timed world event that opens several temporary portals and tasks you with completing their encounters before the event ends.
Chamber of Bone, Flayer Jungle, and Tristram Outskirts are among the encounters associated with this event.
Demon Crypts is an exception to the usual popup format, with a separate entrance and a longer objective involving Na-Krul’s lair.
Waking Nightmare Rewards
Waking Nightmares provide equipment, seasonal progression, and additional rewards depending on the encounter, its difficulty, and any active dungeon modifiers.
The three Major Waking Nightmares are particularly important because they allow you to obtain the Prime Evil Splinters associated with Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto.
Each Splinter grants a different Iconic Power and provides bonuses for specific seasonal activities:
- Splinter of Terror: Diablo’s Flames of Metus, with additional bonuses for Helltides and Infernal Hordes.
- Splinter of Destruction: Baal’s Ice of Excidium, with additional bonuses for Kurast Undercity and Lair Bosses.
- Splinter of Hatred: Mephisto’s Ghosts of Odium, with additional bonuses for Nightmare Dungeons and The Pit.
Only one Prime Evil Splinter can be active at a time, although you can obtain another from the larger Waking Nightmares if you decide to change powers.
Minor Waking Nightmares provide regular dungeon rewards, while Chronicles introduce modifiers that can improve rewards or add special encounters such as the Echo of Pindleskin.
Completing the required Capstone dungeons also allows you to advance through the Season Rank system and claim the rewards associated with higher ranks.
Tips for Completing Waking Nightmares
- Focus on objectives: Complete the required objectives first if you want to clear Waking Nightmares quickly without spending time on unnecessary fights.
- Explore every area: Take your time clearing enemies and exploring the dungeon if you want to maximize your loot and experience.
