Along with Eru and Maka, you reached a portal that will grant you access to the Spirit Realm but preparation is needed.
Luckily for you, Maka and Eru know exactly what to do and though the process is painful, this is the only way to reach Ah Bulan.
Now you will have to enter this realm and fight your way through enemies to find Ah Bulan and figure out what has happened to him.
How To Get Across The Threshold Quest?
Across the Threshold begins once you have completed the Forgotten Gods Quest, where you previously made your way to the Spirit Portal with Maka and Eru.

Across The Threshold Quest Walkthrough
The quest begins with you speaking to Maka, which triggers a cutscene where you are put through excruciating pain before you enter the Spirit Realm.
Once you are in the Spirit Realm, you will need to speak with Eru before you start your journey through the area while he and Maka accompany you.
You will need to explore the Spirit Realm and fight your way through the Hollows that have invaded it until you reach Ah Bulan.
Ah Bulan seems alright at first but as you approach, he appears to be suffering you will still need to attempt to speak with him.
Upon speaking with Ah Bulan, he has already been corrupted and will begin to attack you, leaving you the only option to fight back.
With Ah Bulan defeated, the corruption continues to spread and you will need to speak with Eru, which begins a cutscene where he cuts out Ah Bulan’s Heart.
Exit through the portal and speak with Maka while Eru takes his time to mourn Ah Bulan and the quest will come to an end after a short scene.
Across The Threshold Rewards
After defeating Ah Bulan and Eru extracting the heart, Across The Threshold will be complete and you will be able to exit the Spirit Realm.
The quest ends after your conversation with Maka, which rewards you with XP and Gold along with a new quest called A Deeper Sickness being available.
Verdict
The journey to the Spirit Realm was a long and tough one and with all the hope shattered, there was still hope left following the death of Ah Bulan.
While Ah Bulan was corrupted, it did not spread as fast as expected and this left his heart intact, which may yet be enough to save Neyrelle.
With Ah Bulan’s Heart now within your grasp, it is time to search for Neyrelle and make use of what remains of Ah Bulan to save her.
