Mercenaries were added to Diablo 4 when the Vessel of Hatred update was released, providing you with a choice between 4 different companions.
Not only could you have one companion to follow you, but another could be added as a reinforcement to appear depending on certain conditions.
The question that comes to mind is usually which Mercenary to choose as a companion, which is why we have organized them in tiers for you.
Best Mercenary Tier List
Tier S (Best)
Raheir (Shield Bearer)
When it comes to fighting enemies in higher difficulties, survival is one of the most important things as dying can take its toll on you.
This is why Raheir is considered a top choice as a mercenary because his abilities are useful for keeping you safe and applying debuffs on your enemies.
Capable of slowing enemies and knocking them down, Raheir gives you an advantage against groups of enemies while his passives are great for keeping you alive.
One of his most popular passives is Raheir’s Aegis, which grants 15% Resistance to all elements, which is a huge help when you are in higher World Tiers.
Tier A (Moderate)
Subo (Bounty Hunter)
Subo can be useful for the traps that he can set up but this is not his main use for most players since he is chosen to be more of a Utility Mercenary.
His Mercenary Perk allows him to reveal all enemies and materials in an area, which is perfect for when you need to head out and farm or track down targets to kill.
Subo can deal a decent amount of damage but making use of his traps is sometimes a great way to disable enemies or make them vulnerable.
One of Subo’s popular passives is Loaded Munitions, which causes enemies affected by Wire Traps and Trip Mines to become vulnerable.
Tier B (Least Effective)
Aldkin (Cursed Child)
Aldkin can be considered a great companion to have beside you due to the damage he can deal but his transformations can be quite a hassle.
When Aldkin transforms, he becomes a powerful demon, but you will either be affected by Curse of Darkness or Curse of Flames.
Curse of Darkness causes both you and your enemies to become vulnerable while Curse of Flames causes you to lose 8% of your Maximum Resource per second.
Choosing the Haunt Mercenary Core (Curse of Darkness) would be better for some players as the loss of their Resource can affect their ability to use Skills in a fight.
Varyana (Berserker Crone)
Varyana is another Mercenary that is great at dealing damage and additional effects from her attacks can provide you with buffs or inflict debuffs onto your enemies.
Her Mercenary Perk provides you with bonus Movement Speed depending on how many enemies you kill and if you can keep the slaughter going. (Resets 7 seconds after not killing)
Varyana doesn’t just buff you with Movement Speed though, she can also increase your attack speed or provide you with healing against bleeding enemies.
Her Earth Breaker ability is a favorite of some players due to its ability to repeatedly knock down groups of enemies.
Verdict
When it comes to your Main Mercenary, choosing one that complements your playstyle is important but those who are looking to try things out for the first time can go with Raheir.
Having Raheir with you will allow you to focus more on your offense since he can still protect you while Subo is a great choice for players who are hunting for materials or searching for enemies.
Every Mercenary can be utilized depending on what Class you are playing as and you can always test them out to see which one fits you best.
