Alkane Mutation is one of the materials that were added to Destiny 2 when The Edge of Fate update came out and is now available on Kepler.
Farming this material can be useful for later ones once you have progressed, as it can be exchanged for various items at the Altar of Relativity.

Alkane Mutation Location
Finding Alkane Mutation is often doable when you are exploring the Curtilage Divide and Augur’s Bethel, which is located to the east of Caldera.
You will first reach the Curtilage Divide when traveling from Caldera, and a Landing Zone can later be unlocked. (Traveling further east will bring you to Augur’s Bethel.)
How To Get Alkane Mutation?
1) Harvest Alkane Mutation
Exploring both the Curtilage Divide and Augur’s Bethel will allow you to stumble across Alkane Mutation nodes, which can be interacted with.
Interacting with these will allow you to harvest the Alkane Mutation from them, providing you with 1 for each node that you collect from.
Traveling through these areas will allow you to find some of these nodes in similar locations from time to time, making it a good idea to keep an eye out for them.
2) Defeating Major Combatants
While you are exploring Augur’s Bethel, if you happen to stumble upon the House of Exile Offensive Lieutenant, defeating him will reward you with Alkane Mutation.
Upon being defeated, the House of Exile Offensive Lieutenant will drop a pickup that will provide you with 7 Alkane Mutation, and he will respawn from time to time.
3) Kepler Activities
Materials are often tied to specific locations, and doing activities or missions within the Curtilage Divide or Augur’s Bethel will reward you with Alkane Mutation.
In addition to this, when completing “The Message” mission, you will receive 1 of each of the resources that are found in the different regions of Kepler.
Alkane Mutation Uses
Similar to the other materials that are found on Kepler, Alkane Mutations can be used as a currency when exchanging at the Altar of Relativity.
Depending on the daily region rotation, Alkane Mutation may be the main material used and will be used for making exchanges.

Farming Alkane Mutation will often be done as you continue to do activities and explore, but you should already have some by the time you finish the seasonal quest.
