Valheim: How to Level Up Wood Cutting Skill

Wood Cutting is a skill that determines how effectively your character can damage trees, logs, and stumps using an axe.

The skill naturally increases while gathering wood, making it one of the easiest skills to improve throughout a normal Valheim playthrough.

Higher Wood Cutting levels let you bring down trees faster, which becomes increasingly useful when gathering large amounts of wood for crafting and building.

Wood Cutting Skill Effects

Wood Cutting increases the chop damage dealt against trees, logs, stumps, and other objects that can be damaged through chopping.

The damage bonus gradually increases with your skill level, reaching approximately 141% additional damage when Wood Cutting reaches level 100.

However, Wood Cutting does not reduce the stamina required to swing an axe, as stamina reduction is instead provided by the Axes skill.

How to Level Up Wood Cutting Skill?

Wood Cutting experience is earned whenever you successfully hit a tree with an axe, providing 1 XP for each qualifying attack.

Experience is awarded per swing rather than per object hit, so striking several trees with one attack does not provide additional Wood Cutting XP.

You can also gain Wood Cutting experience from trees that are currently too hard for your equipped axe to properly damage.

Best Way to Level Up Wood Cutting Fast

The most practical way to level Wood Cutting is to find an area containing plenty of trees and continuously chop them with an axe.

Prioritize having plenty of stamina through food and the Rested effect, allowing you to perform more swings before stopping to recover.

Since experience is earned per successful swing rather than the amount of chop damage inflicted, stronger trees can provide plenty of opportunities for repeated attacks.

Continue chopping fallen logs and stumps while gathering the resulting wood, allowing you to gain experience while also collecting useful building materials.

Wood Cutting vs Axes Skill

Wood Cutting and Axes are separate skills despite both being associated with using axes, and each improves a different part of their performance.

Striking trees increases Wood Cutting, while using an axe against creatures increases Axes and improves its effectiveness as a combat weapon.

If the same swing strikes both a tree and a creature, you can gain experience for both skills, with the creature hit increasing the experience gained.

Does Wood Cutting Reduce Axe Stamina Usage?

Increasing Wood Cutting does not reduce the amount of stamina consumed when swinging your axe, regardless of how high the skill becomes.

Instead, stamina consumption is affected by the Axes skill, which can reduce the stamina cost of axe attacks as its level increases.

Wood Cutting therefore makes each hit against a tree stronger, while stamina management still depends on food, other bonuses, and your Axes level.

Does Wood Cutting Let You Chop Stronger Trees?

Increasing Wood Cutting does not allow a weaker axe to damage tree types that normally require a higher-tier chopping tool.

Trees such as Birch still require an appropriate axe regardless of whether your Wood Cutting skill is low or already approaching level 100.

Progressing through stronger axes therefore remains necessary for accessing certain wood types, while Wood Cutting simply increases your damage against valid targets.

Maximum Wood Cutting Skill Level

Wood Cutting has a maximum level of 100, with each level gradually increasing the chop damage you deal against susceptible objects.

At level 100, the skill provides approximately 141% increased damage against trees compared to the damage produced at skill level zero.

Additional tree chopping will no longer provide skill progression after reaching 100 unless your Wood Cutting level is subsequently reduced.

Does Wood Cutting Skill Decrease When You Die?

Wood Cutting is affected by Valheim’s standard death penalty, meaning dying can reduce the skill levels you have accumulated.

A normal death removes 5% of your current skill levels, potentially undoing a considerable amount of progress at higher Wood Cutting levels.

The temporary No Skill Drain effect received after dying prevents subsequent deaths during its duration from causing another skill reduction.

Verdict

Wood Cutting is worth increasing because gathering wood remains necessary for building, crafting, fuel, and numerous other activities throughout Valheim.

There is little reason to grind the skill immediately, as regular tree cutting will steadily increase it while providing resources you already need.

Higher levels become especially noticeable during large building projects, where the increased chop damage considerably reduces the time spent gathering wood.
