The Rested bonus is one of the most useful effects in Valheim, and I recommend having it active whenever you leave your base.
Resting provides major regeneration bonuses on its own, while becoming Rested lets you take several of those benefits with you while exploring.
Building a comfortable home makes the effect last even longer, giving you more time before you need to return and refresh the bonus.
What is Resting?
Resting is a temporary status effect that activates when you meet the required conditions, and it eventually provides the longer-lasting Rested bonus.
You can start Resting while sheltered near a fire, or by sitting beside a fire when the surrounding conditions allow you to rest.
While resting, health regeneration increases by 200%, while stamina and Eitr regeneration are both increased by 300%.
You need to remain Resting for 20 uninterrupted seconds before the Rested status effect is applied to your character.
How to Get the Rested Bonus?
The easiest way to become Rested is to enter your base, remain sheltered near a lit fire, and wait for the Resting effect to appear.
Remain there for 20 seconds without being interrupted, after which Rested will appear alongside a timer showing how long the effect lasts.
Nearby enemies, harmful status effects, losing your fire, or becoming Wet can prevent you from Resting and stop you from receiving the bonus.
Sleeping in a usable bed also provides Rested, allowing you to skip the normal 20-second wait when you are able to sleep through the night.
Rested Bonus Effects
Rested continues working after you leave your base, providing substantial regeneration and progression bonuses until its remaining duration reaches zero.
While Rested, your health regeneration is increased by 50%, while both stamina and Eitr regeneration receive a much larger 100% increase.
The effect also provides a hidden 50% increase to skill XP, making Rested particularly valuable whenever you are trying to level your skills.
Because these bonuses work during exploration and combat, I would always refresh Rested before heading into a dangerous biome or fighting a boss.
How Comfort Works?
Comfort determines how long your Rested bonus lasts, with better furniture and decorations allowing you to maintain the effect for considerably longer.
Your current Comfort level appears when Resting, making it easy to check whether the furniture surrounding your character is actually contributing.
Different types of furniture belong to Comfort categories, and placing several items from the same category generally does not stack their values together.
Instead, the strongest qualifying item from that category provides its Comfort value, so filling your home with identical furniture will not increase Comfort indefinitely.
How Comfort Affects Rested Duration?
The Rested bonus has a base duration of seven minutes, with another minute added for every point of Comfort around your character.
This means Comfort 1 provides eight minutes of Rested, while Comfort 10 increases the total duration to 17 minutes.
Increasing Comfort only extends the timer and does not strengthen the health, stamina, Eitr, or skill XP bonuses provided by Rested.
Because of this, upgrading Comfort is mainly about spending more time away from home before you need to refresh the effect.
How to Increase Comfort?
You can increase Comfort by placing different types of furniture and decorations close to the area where you normally rest inside your base.
Beds, chairs, tables, thrones, rugs, banners, fires, Hot Tubs, lighting, decorations, and several later-game furnishings can contribute to your total Comfort.
Shelter itself also contributes Comfort, making a properly constructed resting room considerably more effective than simply standing beside an outdoor fire.
I recommend keeping your main Comfort items together around your bed or resting area so their effective ranges overlap whenever you refresh Rested.
Do Comfort Items Stack?
Comfort items from different categories can contribute together, but multiple pieces belonging to the same category generally do not stack their Comfort values.
For example, filling a room with several chairs does not continuously increase Comfort, so there is little benefit in spamming the same furniture.
When multiple qualifying pieces occupy the same category, the item providing the better Comfort value is generally the one that contributes.
This makes building an effective resting room more about combining different Comfort categories than simply placing as much furniture as possible.
Maximum Comfort Level
The maximum achievable Comfort increases as you unlock better furniture and decorations while progressing through Valheim.
Valheim 1.0 rebalanced several Comfort items, with stronger rugs, jute banners, and other decorations now contributing more to an optimized resting area.
Seasonal pieces such as the Maypole and Yule Tree can increase Comfort even further, extending the maximum duration of your Rested bonus.
How to Get Rested Away From Your Base?
You do not always need to sail or run all the way home when Rested expires, as a temporary resting location can refresh the effect.
A simple shelter and Campfire can provide the conditions needed to begin Resting, making a small outpost useful during longer exploration trips.
You can even place a Campfire near the entrance of certain dungeons and sit beside it, providing an inexpensive way to regain a basic Rested bonus.
The resulting timer may be shorter than the one from your main Comfort room, but even a basic Rested effect is much better than continuing without it.
Can You Rest While Wet?
The Wet effect prevents Resting, so you normally need to find proper shelter and wait for the effect to expire before resting again.
The Hot Tub is an exception, allowing you to receive the Resting effect even while your character is currently Wet.
Staying dry is therefore important when creating temporary resting locations, especially while exploring rainy areas such as the Swamp.
What Removes the Rested Bonus?
Once acquired, Rested remains active after leaving your fire and shelter, allowing you to carry its benefits throughout your adventures.
The bonus disappears when its displayed timer expires or you log out, requiring you to Rest again when returning to the world.
Becoming Wet does not remove Rested, although the Wet penalties can counteract some of the health and stamina regeneration benefits it provides.
Is the Rested Bonus Worth Keeping Active?
I would consider Rested something you should maintain throughout the entire game rather than a small optional bonus you only need for difficult fights.
Doubling stamina and Eitr regeneration makes running, gathering, building, fighting, and exploring noticeably easier while the effect remains active.
The additional 50% skill XP is another major reason to keep it running, especially when deliberately leveling combat, gathering, or movement skills.
Before leaving my base, I would simply make refreshing Rested part of the normal routine alongside repairing equipment and choosing the right food.
Verdict
Rested is one of the easiest bonuses to obtain in Valheim, yet its regeneration and skill XP improvements remain useful throughout the entire game.
A basic fire and shelter are enough to get started, while increasing Comfort gradually extends how long you can keep those benefits active.
I would prioritize a good Comfort area in every main base and avoid heading into longer adventures without refreshing Rested whenever possible.
