With the introduction of the Monument of Triumph update, a new feature was added to Destiny 2, which are distortions, and these take place on different destinations.
Acting as an introduction to this new feature, a new quest becomes available at the start of the update, which has Lodi getting you to go after one of these anomalies.

How To Get Distortions?
“Distortions” becomes available after the completion of “The Tenets,” which becomes available after logging into the game following the Moment of Triumph update.
Once you are on the last quest step for “The Tenets” quest, you will need to claim “Distortions” to complete it.
Distortions Quest Steps
Step 1: Consult Lodi at the Tower
Lodi has been keeping tabs on the Nine and has something he wants to share with you, which requires that you seek him out in the Bazaar area of the Tower.
Step 2: Look for signs of Distortion Breach after completing a public event on a Distorted Destination
After speaking to Lodi, check your map to see which destinations are corrupted by Distortions, and you will need to find a Public Event to join.
Once a Public Event has been completed at a destination that is corrupted by distortions, an Optional Public event will begin, a Distortion Breach, which you must complete.
Step 3: Collect Strange Matter
Your next step will be to collect Strange Matter, a new material that was added in the update, and this can be obtained by defeating enemies, opening chests, and collecting destination materials.
You will need to collect a total of 50 Strange Matter, which will transform into a Strange Signal, allowing you to proceed with the next quest step.
Step 4: Open your map and find where the Strange Signal leads
Check your map to locate the source of the signal and make your way to the area, which you can mark with a waypoint to easily track down.
This will lead you to a Distortion Chest, which you may interact with to obtain rewards, and this will also complete the “Distortions” quest.
Distortions Quest Rewards
Following the signal and opening the chest will reward you with Distortion Chest rewards and complete the quest altogether.
From here on, you can continue to do Distortion activities to obtain various rewards at different destinations.
